Proving 0.999999… is Equal to 1

September 23, 2009 by

This thought came to me, if I have the number 0.999… and it will go on infinitely, will it be equal to 1 or will be very close to 1 but not equal  1. There are a few proofs on the internet and here is the way I’ve proved it.

So after examining the number 0.999…, I found out I can actually rewrite it in an infinite series form 0.9 + 0.09 + 0.009 + 0.0009 + … Or: 0.999We know that the first term 0.9 can already be written as 1 – 0.1, the second term which is 0.09 can be written as 0.1 – 0.01, the third term which is 0.009 can be written as 0.01 – 0.001, and so on and so for. So now rewriting the the whole series again, we’ll get (1 – 0.1) + (0.1 – 0.01) + (0.001  – 0.0001) + (0.0001 + 0.00001) + … What I’ve found out is that the terms cancel out each other, like in the first term 0.1 got canceled out by the second term, the 0.01 in the second term got canceled out by the term term and if these goes on infinitely all the terms will be canceled out eventually leaving 1 behind. So I’ve proved that 0.999… is equal to 1.

Calculating the Strength of Wind Produced by a Fan

September 22, 2009 by

I did some formulation on this and it wasn’t very impressive. I don’t think there’s any practical use of this theory, I did this for fun. I always fun physics fun, theorizing new things, so this was just one of my piece of you work.

All right, lets all start with a simple fan that could come in any shape with an area of A (m²). In a fan obviously there’s gas being pushed through it, the more gas it pushes through per unit time, or lets call it airflow rate, the stronger the wind. So to put it mathematically, the strength of wind is directly proportional to the airflow rate. The airflow rate of course can be calculate by R = V/t (m^3 / s). Another factor affecting the airflow rate is the area of the fan, the larger the area, the weaker the wind. Putting it mathematically, the strength of wind is inversely proportional to the area of the fan. The reason why area of the fan is affecting the strength may not be very obvious so I will explain. When the fan apply a force on the air particles, they would move through the fan and the force will spread evenly around it, if the area is small, the force will be more concentrated causing resulting in a larger force experienced by the air particles. So combining the factors of the airflow rate and area you’ll get S = (R/A) where S is the strength of the wind. With some manipulations you will find that the dimension of S is actually the similar to speed, you’ve guessed it, calculating the speed of wind is actually determined by the speed of air particles, as you’ve always see in weather forecast.

So this is the theory I’ve been talking about. My apologies for the lack of diagram because I was a little lazy to do drawings, but hope you will understand it. If you’d like one I will draw it for you, because I love you… and don’t take that too serious.

10 Guilty Pleasures…

September 21, 2009 by

I was asked by a certain friend of mine to blog about this subject… and as I have nothing better to do at the moment, I would be obliged to do so. Here are my random 10:

1.  Secretly buying things I am not supposed to. From a wide range varying from Pokemon Cards to a Gameboy(yes, a gameboy) and a Pokemon Blue version for a hundred bucks, to Prepaid game cards repeatedly without most peoples’ knowledge.

2. Procrastinating time and time again on studying, an obstacle I still can’t overcome. I can’t study for prolonged periods of time alone by myself, therefore on every possible opportunity I would study with my peers. Library, anyone?

3. Being a spendthrift (to a certain extent). I would almost never say no to a fancy meal which I can afford, and I usually buy something without as much as a blink of an eye, not caring about how that hard earned money came about or such.

4. Gossiping (to a certain extent too). Especially nowadays.

5. Doing something I know it’s wrong, like illegally downloading music.

6. This is not so much as pleasure as anything else, but since I have nothing guilty to blog about at the moment… 2 years ago when immature acts caused a break in what would be an extremely interesting friendship. In fact, there are many things that I regret doing 2 years ago.

7. Knowing something many others do not. I will not elaborate much, but i regret those.

8. This post makes me look like a fiend… Blaming others for my misconceptions and my wrongdoing many times; and assurance I give myself when I did badly in a paper. I hate myself now, haha

9. Treating many critically and with generalized views; but this has been corrected to a large degree, as I can safely say,as I learnt much from everyone during my four years in this school. (contrary to popular belief)

10. Killing my friend slowly by giving him his only salvation… luxury by video games.

Well, this pretty much sums up every guilt and guilty pleasure I can think of at this moment. Hope everyone does one of these, haha. Will blog again soon…

The Most Useless Fact in Mathematics

September 21, 2009 by

I am going to present to you the most useless fact in Mathematics that have absolutely no practical use at all. You may want to argue that it may have later, like G.H Hardy (Godfrey Harold Hardy) and Srinivasa Ramanujan who formulated the Hardy-Ramanujan Asymptotic Formula and G.H Hardy said that “I have never done anything ‘useful’. No discover of mine has made, or likely to make, directly or indirectly, for good or ill, the least difference to the amenity of the world.” However later this formula was used by physicist Niels Bohr to find quantum partition functions of atomic nuclei and to derive thermodynamic functions of non-interacting Bose-Einstein systems. I bet G.H Hardy won’t be very happy to hear this. So here’s the most useless fact: The number 40 is the only number which in the English language has its letter arranged in alphabetical order (forty). If anyone of you can find some practical use for this fact I would be happy to give you a present.

Some Entertainment

September 18, 2009 by

When the long stressful preliminary examinations were finally over, the Edelweiss Idealogists got together and had some entertainment. We gathered at J’s house and had a game of Monopoly, a game of luck, choices and calculations. We had a great time though, and here are the results of today’s game:

1st: Mr.WYZard (Head of Maths and Science Department)

2nd: Ry’ (Head of Language Department)

3rd: J (Head of Philosophy and History Department)

4th: Ling (unassigned)

As usual Ling got the last place in the game, and this picture will express better than words his feelings when he stepped onto someone’s property (with hotel) and had to pay a huge sum of money:Ling Moment

(Trivia: Can you see his professional yo-yo?)

So after a day of fun, we need to get back on our feet, its not over. As for me, its time to initiate Operation Zero and Operation Resurrect. I believe J and Ry will do the same too, it’s about time to get things serious.

Edelweiss Pirates Officially Changed

September 14, 2009 by

The Big Reason Why Blogger FailsI would like to announce that Edelweiss Pirates have officially changed to Edelweiss Idealogies. The big reason why we decided to change is that Blogger failed on us. There’s some problems with it which caused us to have difficulties with the editing and uploading of images (as seen in the picture above). I guess there’s some problems with the server of Blogger. So we’ve decided to use WordPress instead. We are still young on WordPress and there are many thing we haven’t understand about the mechanism of WordPress, please give us some time. So this will be our official site.

About Me: J

September 14, 2009 by

Hi everybody, I am J the co-founder of this new and fresh blog. This is my first blogging experience and I wish that I have the guidance and support of the more experienced bloggers and readers of this blog.

About me: I am a reserved and somehow introverted person. I love to play strategy games in particular (Warcraft and Age of Empires), read fiction books and daydream about my euphoria future. My favorite comic and anime is one piece, which many comic and animation lovers will know of. Religious wise, I think I am very much influenced by the ideas and noble purposes of Buddhism but I wouldn’t consider myself a Buddhist yet, as I have not fully understand its context and philosophies. To be honest and candid, I seldom write very much, and only started my reading and literature appreciation since secondary three, so please bare with my poor command of English and many of the spellings, tenses and grammatical errors that may occur in my posts.

What will I be writing about in this blog? I will be writing mostly about my personal philosophies, encounters and stories that I find enriching, meaningful and beneficial to others who will read it. I would also find interesting and inspirational materials to post them in this blog. My purposes of creating this blog are simple: I want the readers to feel more knowledgeable and wise after reading this blog. Next, I would like to share my views or outlooks of certain events with the readers. I may discuss and talk about politically or religiously sensitive issues so I urge my readers to be broad and open-minded in reading my posts. I believe that we should discuss more about issues which are sensitive or not because it will lead to a better understanding, and maybe in the process banish the ‘sensitive’ feelings.

Lastly, I would like to give my genuine thanks to Ryan and WYZard, for their sincere partnership in making this blog a reality. I hope that my posts or writings will be of benefit and edifying to the readers. Yes, I would do my best and once again I hope that every reader will appreciate my writings.

The invention of the internet is a beautiful and multi-purposeful; it is very powerful as it can influence a great number of people, therefore, I hope that every internet-users will use this ‘power’ with responsibility and care.

With Love and sincerity

Whoopsy Daisy…

September 14, 2009 by

This marks the beginning of this blog. I believe I need no self-introduction as most of you have already known me. This blog has no specific goal, and I am not the only administrator to this blog, it also consists of Ryan Lim and Kou Jun Jie (I’ll leave their self-introduction to them). In this blog, we will post whatever we feel like posting, so expect the unexpected. I will make sure this blog be interesting and not like those boring blogs you’ve seen around, just trying to tell the whole world what they do in their everyday life, like as if we even care. Of course in this blog I will also ensure that all writers will use proper English and not those horrendous English you’ve seen around (e.g lol, rofl, dun, sianz, walao and many more…), so I hope Ryan and JJ (Let’s use this abbreviation for Jun Jie next time to make thing simpler) will obey this rule.

So these conclude my self-introduction. Apparently I wanted to include a video of Ryan and I struggling to wrap a birthday present for Xiao Han before ending this post, but looks like he doesn’t support me for doing so. Maybe I’ll post it next time, so this concludes my self-introduction.
